Letter from the New

Chair

Dear Libertarians,

In our January meeting, I was voted in as the Chair of the Libertarian Party in San Francisco. Outgoing chair Starchild has done a smashing job over the last two years and vitalized interest and activity in the party. As evidence of that, San Francisco has the fourth highest increase in registered Libertarians in the state...6.19% from October 5th, 1999 to January 7, 2000. This is equivalent to approximately 25% annual growth. Good job, Starchild!

During the next year, we will continue party growth. With more members, we can exert more influence by:

1) becoming more active in the mass media,

2) running more candidates for office, and

3) making our views known to local officials.

We plan to continue our membership expansion by offering more. More times to meet, more locations, more issues, more discussion, and more fun. Of course, we need you there so we can have more fun with you! If you would like to get together with like-minded individuals of the libertarian persuasion, call us and get involved! There is much we can do, much fun we can have, and much we can accomplish.

Election years are exciting times! Get excited with us at our next meeting, March 25, 5 p.m. (social hour), at Round Table Pizza (2nd floor) at 5160 Geary Boulevard (at 16th Avenue) in the Richmond district.

If you have any questions about this meeting or anything else, call us at 415-775-LPSF or visit our web site at www.lpsf.org.

Sincerely,

David Molony

Chair, Libertarian Party of San Francisco

Recommendations on SF Ballot Propositions

Proposition A, Recreation and Park Bonds: NO

Proposition B, Academy of Science Bonds: NO

Proposition C, Open Space Fund: NO

Proposition D, Board of Supervisors Benefits: NO

Proposition E, Public Assistance Benefits: NO POSITION

Proposition F, Bayview Hunters Point Reparations:

NO POSITION

Propositions E and F raised much discussion in the February 26 meeting. The limiting of cash benefits for certain public assistance programs to 15% of total benefits by Proposition E was viewed as positive by most of those present; but the fingerprinting of recipients, albeit voluntary, and increasing the penalties for fraud were seen as negative factors by others. In Proposition F the waiving of certain property taxes on small businesses is pitted against the appropriation of $150 million for the creation of jobs.

Save the LPSF $200 a Month!

The cost of photocopying and mailing a newsletter to current LPSF members is around $200, almost exactly offsetting our income from dues. Without special fundraising there is thus no money left over for special projects, like a booth at the Gay Freedom Day Parade, or for other ongoing projects, like maintenance of the LPSF website. You can save us the ENTIRE cost of the newsletter if you are willing to have it e-mailed rather than delivered by Uncle Sam. Just send an e-mail message to the Newsletter Coordinator, Mike Acree, at macree@psg.ucsf.edu. Thanks!
